Suspect in shooting of vehicles, police on I-71 wants to plead not guilty by insanity

A suspect accused of firing at passing autos and law enforcement alongside Interstate 71 in Delaware County wants to plead not guilty by explanation of madness, courtroom information show.

Jonathon Myers, 21, of Columbus’ Northland place, switched his plea from not guilty Tuesday, information say.

The plea demands an evaluation by a psychological wellness specialist within 30 times and should clearly show that he was unaware that his steps were being unlawful. Delaware County Common Pleas Court Judge David M. Gormley approved the analysis Wednesday.

Myers is accused of capturing at motorists and law enforcement on March 11 immediately after crashing his car or truck along Interstate 71 north of the Gemini Put/IKEA Way exit in Delaware County. He faces 27 legal counts, involved attempted aggravated murder. If convicted on all prices, his sentence could exceed 100 several years in prison.

Video clip reveals the suspect crashing a 2014 Ford Fusion into a cable barrier on the aspect of the highway. According to law enforcement, Myers is accused of then getting out of the car, running back and forth throughout I-71, arguing with a female passenger who also bought out of the vehicle, and firing pictures at passing motorists on the interstate.

Authorities have accused Myers of placing at least 3 cars with bullets — including a UPS truck and a van carrying two members of the Madison Large Faculty wrestling team and two coaches who were being touring to Ohio Condition University’s Schottenstein Center.

Myers fled when officers arrived, functioning north together the freeway, capturing a Columbus police cruiser and firing at officers chasing him. No motorists were injured a Columbus law enforcement officer was taken to a medical center for therapy out of precaution.

An officer shot Myers, who was then taken into custody. The suspect was taken to OhioHealth Grant Health care Center.

Myers is becoming held in the Delaware County jail without bond.
