The Ford Puma is up to a record 2nd place in Italy in April.
Italian new car sales collapse in April at -33% year-on-year to 97,339 units, driving the year-to-date tally down -26.5% to 435,647. Private sales fall even faster at -40.1% to 52,304 and 53% share (-6.5 points) and are down -29% year-to-date to 268,883 and 60.8% share (-2.5). Self-registrations fall -31.4% to 8,938 and 9.1% share and are down -30.1% YTD to 41,590. Long term leases resist much better at -11.3% to 23,155 and 23.5% share vs. 17.8% a year ago and fall -13.4% YTD to 86,178 to 19.5% vs. 16.6%. Short term rentals freefall -39% to 7,599 and 7.7% share vs. 8.5% and are down -38.2% to 17,839 YTD. Company sales skid -14.7% to 6.679 and 6.8% share vs. 5.3% a year ago and fall -12.5% to 27,623 and 6.2% share.
In terms of fuel type, petrol falls -42.9% to 26,664 and 27% share vs. 31.8% a year ago and drops -39.1% year-to-date to 119,175 and 27% vs. 32.7% over the same period in 2021. Diesel is off -38.5% to 20,762 and 21% share vs. 23% and down -37.8% YTD to 92,384 and 20.9% vs. 24.9% in 2021. LPG is down -23.2% to 7,265, HEV is down -18% to 34,524 and 35% share vs. 28.7% a year ago, including 9,046 full hybrid (+11.3%) and 25,478 mild hybrid (-25%). Year-to-date, HEV is off -7.5% to 150,607 and 34.1% share vs. 27.2% in 2021, including 40,714 full hybrid (+12.5%) and 109,893 mild hybrid (-13.3%). PHEV is off -17.1% to 5,552 and 5.6% share vs. 4.6% last year and edges down -1.6% to 22,749 and 5.1% share vs. 3.9%. Finally, BEV unusually freefalls -37.2% year-on-year to 3,050 and 3.1% share vs. 3.3% and is down -20.8% YTD to 14,399 and 3.3% share vs. 3% over the same period in 2021.

Fiat (-37.2%) falls even faster than the market but hits 15% share vs. 14.3% so far this year. Volkswagen (-38.1%) is also in freefall but reclaims the 2nd spot it held over the Full Year 2021, dislodging Ford (-34.8%). Toyota (-11.6%) is very solid in context and climbs to the third spot of the podium while Audi (-25.4%) is up to a splendid 5th place. Dacia (-4.9%) posts the best result in the Top 10 at #7, way above sister brand Renault (-42.8%) down to a paltry #14. BMW (-17.8%) also resists whereas Peugeot (-51.7%), Citroen (-47.1%) and Jeep (-35.8%) implode. Further down, notice DR Motor (+97.7%) up to #19, Cupra (+193.5%) up to #22 and well above Seat (-63.4%) at #26, Honda (+61.5%), MG (+2520) and Lynk & Co up to #33.
Over in the models ranking, the Fiat Panda (-7.6%) resists very well to reach 9.7% share, its 2nd best in the past two years below only October 2021 (11%). The Ford Puma (-12%) hits an all-time record 2nd place in Italy this month, eclipsing its previous best of #3 hit in February 2021, January 2022 and February 2022. The VW T-Roc (-9.6%) reaches its best Italian ranking since May 2020 (#2) contrasting with a 19th place year-to-date. The Lancia Ypsilon (-46.8%) is relegated to 4th place albeit only 1 sale below the T-Roc. The Dacia Sandero (+5.6%) rounds out the Top 5 with the only year-on-year gain there and ranks #3 year-to-date. The Toyota Yaris Cross is back up 10 spots on March to #6, its second best ranking below the #5 it hit last December and January. It seems to have cannibalised the Yaris at -57.7% for the month. The Jeep Compass (+1.4%) is the only additional gainer in the Top 10 with the Fiat 500 (-63.7%), Jeep Renegade (-52.8%) and Fiat 500X (-52%) all in a rut. Notice also the Kia Sportage (+28.5%), Cupra Formentor (up to a record #25), the Toyota Aygo X landing directly at #27 for its very first month in market and the Alfa Romeo Stelvio (+31.9%) all posting fantastic scores.
