2023 Honda Civic Type R First Look Review: The hot hatch grows up

Honda finally unveiled the 2023 Honda Civic Type R after teasing the new hot hatch for months. Honda unveiled the new Civic Type R at an event in Los Angeles, but it still didn’t give up any specs.

All that we know for now is that the 2023 Civic Type R will be powered by a modified version of the current car’s 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine, which is mated to a six-speed manual transmission with automatic rev-matching. Honda only says that the updated engine is “even more powerful and responsive” than the current version, which has 306 horsepower and 295 pound-feet of torque.

One performance upgrade that we can see are the new 265/30-series Michelin Pilot Sport 4S tires with 19-inch wheels, which is a change from the outgoing model’s 245/30 tires with 20-inch wheels.

Just like the powertrain, Honda is keeping the details about the chassis upgrades to a minimum as well, an only states that it has “enhanced suspension and steering performance.” We already know that the new Civic Type R out performs the last generation, since the 2023 CTR set a new front-wheel drive track record at the Suzuka Circuit. Brembo brakes are used again to keep everything under control.

One of the big criticisms about the last-generation CTR was it’s boy racer styling that was a bit too aggressive. The good news is that Honda has toned down the styling with a cleaner look, which makes it look a bit more upscale. At the rear there’s still a large wing and we’re happy that Honda kept the three exhaust tips in the center. Just like before the driver and front passenger get sportier seats that are wrapped in a suede-like material.

Inside the upgrades are similar to the current Civic hatchback with a 10.2-inch digital instrument cluster and a 9-inch infotainment screen with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.

Overall it appears that Honda didn’t mess with much of the Civic Type R, with the biggest change being a less polarizing exterior.

Honda hasn’t announced the pricing for the 2023 Civic Type R, but it will arrive this fall.
